The Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel Foundation mourns the loss of
its founder and donor
Prof. Dr. iur. Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel
* 2. August 1936 + 19. Dezember 2025
Karl Heinz Böckstiegel was one of the most influential figures in German arbitration and one of the world's leading arbitration practitioners. His outstanding international reputation was reflected, among other things, in his role as President of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague (1984–1988), as President (1996–2012) and Honorary President (from 2012) of the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS), as President of the London Court of Arbitration (1993–1997) and as a member of the Board of Directors and Advisory Board of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA).
Throughout his life, he was particularly committed to promoting young academics in the field of international arbitration. Against this background, Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel established the Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel Foundation, whose purpose is to promote science and research as well as vocational training, particularly in the field of national and international arbitration.
The foundation's board and board of trustees will greatly miss Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel as a person, discussion partner and mentor, and the Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel Foundation will honour his memory. His work in international arbitration and his goals will live on in the Foundation's projects.
